The American physiologist Edmund Jacobson (1885–1976) is seen as the founder of progressive muscle relaxation. In 1929, he discovered that muscle tension increases significantly with feelings of unrest or agitation. Conversely, anxiety reduces if a person is able to decrease muscle tension. The principle of progressive muscle relaxation is the following: A group of muscles can be relaxed very effectively if it is tensed beforehand. During progressive muscle relaxation, the effect is used that relaxation is transmitted from one muscle group to another, resulting in further relaxation processes in the entire body. Blood pressure will decrease, the pulse and intestinal activity are reduced and breathing calms down. This method of relaxation is also taught in many rehabilitation facilities. This Induction can either be used seperately or combined with other Inductions and Deepenings.
